    Arcanist: Wand and Talisman

The Arcanist build guide for the class-locked weapon rules, covering the wand matrix, the mandatory talisman, supports, Disciplines, and gear priorities.

The Arcanist carries a wand in the main hand and a talisman in the off-hand. That configuration is permanent. The class never changes weapon family, and no other pair of hands is legal. The hub tolerates a missing talisman. Map entry refuses one.

    Your weapon

The main hand accepts a wand and nothing else. The off-hand accepts a talisman and nothing else. An Arcanist can never hold a shield, a scepter, or a second wand.

Wand bases, with the first map tier that drops them:

    BaseMap tier
    Ember Wand1
    Cinderbrand Wand1
    Rime Wand2
    Hoarfrost Wand3
    Storm Wand4
    Thunder-Script Wand5
    Void Wand6
    Starless Wand7
    Astral Prism Wand10

Talisman bases, with the first map tier that drops them:

    BaseMap tier
    Apprentice Talisman1
    Ember-Eye Talisman1
    Rimeglass Talisman3
    Wardstone Talisman5
    Storm-Cage Talisman5
    Occultist Talisman7
    Voidheart Talisman7
    Seven-Sigil Talisman10

The talisman is mandatory. It carries an energy shield base, a school implicit, and a full set of affixes, and it completes the loadout predicate. Without a talisman in the off-hand, every wand matrix gem goes inactive.

A talisman is not a shield. It carries its own slot type and no shield tag. It never satisfies a shield condition and it never satisfies a block condition. The two shield gems stay locked to the Arcanist forever. Every Block panel node that reads a shield reads nothing on this class.

    Your skill matrix

The wand family owns ten matrix gems. Every one is exclusive to the wand and talisman loadout.

    SchoolSingle targetArea and clear
    PhysicalKinetic Lance (projectile)Force Wave (cone)
    FireFirebolt (projectile)Falling Star (impact area)
ColdFrost Lance (projectile)Winter’s Reach (channelled beam)
    LightningStorm Needle (projectile)Arc Bolt (fork)
ChaosVoid Ray (channelled beam)Gloam Nova (nova)

Every matrix gem requires character level 1. Every matrix gem deals 100% of its listed school. The gate is the exact loadout, not the gem tags. A wand and a talisman activate all ten. Any other pair of hands deactivates all ten.

This matrix is pure spell. No gem in it carries the attack tag, so cast speed and spell damage pay the whole bar and attack affixes pay none of it.

Pick one single-target gem and one area gem at minimum. See the Skill Gem Index for the full data.

Two shouts exist, and the Arcanist reaches neither. Both require a melee weapon in hand, and a wand is a ranged weapon. All six auras are universal, and only one aura runs at a time.

    Starter kit

A new Arcanist starts with these items and nothing else.

    PartValue
    Starter gemFalling Star
Main handEmber Wand, item level 10
    Off-handApprentice Talisman, item level 10
    Attributes6 strength, 8 dexterity, 28 intelligence

Every class starts with exactly 42 attribute points and exactly one gem. There are no pouch grants. Every other gem arrives through a global drop or through player trading.

    Support gems

Each active gem instance holds four support slots. The slots unlock at gem levels 1, 5, 10, and 20, and they cost 1,000, 10,000, 75,000, and 500,000 gold. All four cost 586,000 gold together. The first slot is not free. The unlocks belong to the gem instance and survive a trade.

A support gains levels only while its host gem stays equipped. Bench a gem and its supports stop progressing.

Some supports fail on delivery shape rather than on tags. A channelled beam has no area to resize and cannot repeat, so Winter’s Reach and Void Ray reject Increased Area, Concentrated Effect, Expanding Pulse, and Aftershock. Both also reject Spell Echo, Swift Incantation, Quickened Execution, and Deliberate Force, because all four exclude channels. Arc Bolt is a fork and carries no area tag, so no area support attaches to it at all.

Verified supports for the wand matrix, by role:

Ailment payoffKindling, Virulence, Deep Freeze, OverchargeThe matching ailment only

Far Shot and Point Blank share the distance_damage conflict group. Attach one of the two, never both. Increased Area, Concentrated Effect, and Expanding Pulse share area_shape, so one of the three attaches per gem.

Auras take twelve aura supports and no hit supports. Amplified Presence, Rhythmic Pulse, and one of Concentrated Presence or Expansive Halo make a solid set.

See Support Gems for the full compatibility rules.

    Discipline directions

A character binds three panels from the twenty-panel catalog. Slots unlock at character levels 1, 10, and 20. Levels 1 through 48 grant one Remembrance Point each, for 48 total. One panel accepts at most 16 points. A Greater Truth unlocks at 9 invested points, and a Final Truth at 16. Level 49 Crowns one fully invested panel. Levels 49 through 53 grant five Ascendant Points.

The Arcanist can never hold a shield, so the Block panel gives it nothing. Never bind Block on an Arcanist.

Four directions that fit the wand:

    • Spell, Energy Shield, and the school you deal. The default. Spell pays every gem, and Energy Shield is the defensive layer the talisman already feeds.
    • Spell, Fire, and Ignite. For a Firebolt and Falling Star bar. One damage school, one ailment, one aura.
    • Spell, Lightning, and Fork and Chain. For Arc Bolt. Fork and Chain pays the extra legs the gem already produces.
    • Spell, Channeling, and Chaos. For a Void Ray bar. Channeling pays the beam directly, and Chaos pays the school that nothing else covers.

See Disciplines for Truth and Crown mechanics.

    Gear priorities

Read How Survival Actually Works before you plan a single affix.

    1. All four resistances to the cap. Deep maps subtract a fixed penalty from every uncapped total, so overcap. Partial resistance is worth close to nothing. A pack delivers its damage in one school inside a few seconds, so the worst school decides the death.
    2. Chaos last to arrive. The three elemental schools close on ordinary drops. Chaos does not. Hunt suffixes that pay an element and chaos together, and read the affix before you assume an all-resistance roll covers chaos.
    3. Energy shield. The Arcanist has no shield, no block, and no shout. Energy shield is its defensive layer. Take maximum energy shield, energy-shield regeneration, and a shorter recharge delay.
    4. Life. The Arcanist owns the smallest life pool of the six classes. It still dies through the last point of it, so do not trade every life roll away.
    5. Mana. Deep spell bars and a reserved aura both drink from one pool.
    6. Offence last. Spell damage, cast speed, elemental damage, and the school your matrix gems deal.

    Traps

    • The class lock is the trap. A scepter is the item that tempts an Arcanist, and the equip rules reject it outright. Scepter gems stay dead on this class. Sell the scepter.
    • The talisman is not a shield. It never satisfies a shield condition or a block condition. Shield Stun, Shield Charge, and the Block panel stay out of reach forever.
    • An empty off-hand kills the bar. An Arcanist with no talisman keeps its wand and loses every matrix gem at once. Replace a talisman before you replace anything else.
    • The Arcanist has no shout. Both shouts demand a melee weapon. Plan the free slot around an aura and gear.
    • Channels refuse the spell tempo supports. Void Ray and Winter’s Reach reject Spell Echo and Swift Incantation. The bench hides the failure by default. Read the rejection line and believe it.
