    Fighter Build: Sword and Shield

How a Fighter builds inside the permanent sword-and-shield lock, with the ten matrix gems, support slots, Disciplines, and gear order.

A Fighter holds a one-handed sword in the main hand and a shield in the off-hand. That is the only legal configuration, and it is permanent. The Fighter never changes weapon family. No sword-and-shield Fighter ever equips a dagger, an axe, a bow, a wand, or a scepter. The hub tolerates an incomplete loadout. Map entry refuses one.

    Your weapon

Main hand: one-handed sword. Off-hand: shield.

Six sword bases are enabled. The number in brackets is the map tier that unlocks the base.

    BaseMap tier
    Rusted Shortsword1
    Quickthorn Sabre1
    Emberedge Blade3
    Rimefang Sword5
    Stormkiss Rapier7
    Kingsfall Longsword10

The catalog enables 31 shield bases, so the off-hand gives you the widest base choice in the game. The shield pays three ways. It carries a large defensive base value. It carries another set of affix slots, which is where a second pair of resistances lives. It also satisfies every shield condition in the game.

A talisman is a separate slot type. A talisman never satisfies a shield condition and a Fighter cannot equip one. Read every shield condition as “a real shield”.

    Your skill matrix

The Fighter matrix holds ten gems. Every gem below requires a one-handed sword.

    SchoolSingle targetArea and clear
    PhysicalSkewer (strike)Steel Tempest (channelled area)
    FireEmberpoint (strike)Cinder Sweep (cone)
    ColdRimepiercer (strike)Winter Arc (cone)
    LightningVolt Lunge (strike)Stormwheel (nova)
ChaosGloam Edge (strike)Void Tempest (channelled area)

Every matrix gem is class-exclusive. Every one requires character level 1. Every one deals 100% of its listed damage school. The gate is the exact loadout, not the tag line. No other class equips a sword gem, and you equip no other class’s matrix gem.

The Fighter also uses the two shield gems, Shield Stun and Shield Charge. Both need a real shield. Only the Fighter and the shield Spellblade qualify.

You also use the two melee shouts, Vanguard’s Cry and Ruin Cry, which need a melee weapon in hand. Every class uses the six auras: Iron Choir, Quickening Current, Prismatic Covenant, Crimson Standard, Miasma Mantle, and Hushed Dominion. One aura runs at a time.

The Skill Gem Index lists the exact numbers.

Starter weaponRusted Shortsword, item level 10
Starter off-handKeeper Bulwark shield, item level 10
    Attributes20 STR / 12 DEX / 10 INT

Every class starts with 42 attribute points and exactly one gem. There are no pouch grants. Every other gem arrives through a global drop or a player trade. Plan the early game around Steel Tempest, and slot the second gem when one drops.

    Support gems

Each active-gem instance holds four support slots. The slots unlock at gem levels 1, 5, 10, and 20 for 1,000, 10,000, 75,000, and 500,000 gold. The full set costs 586,000 gold. No slot is free. Buy each slot as soon as the gold and the gem level allow it.

A support gains levels only while its host gem stays equipped. Attach a correct cheap support early. A late perfect support never catches up.

Some supports fail on delivery shape and not on tags. Area-resize supports need a real area, so a strike, a charge, and a beam channel reject them. Repeat supports reject a single-target strike and a charge. The channelled area skills Steel Tempest and Void Tempest accept both families, because they carry an area.

    Verified Fighter attachments:

    • Skewer and the other four strikes take Melee Splash for pack overlap, Close Combat for full-value range, Sure Strike for accuracy, and Crushing Momentum for flat hit damage.
    • Steel Tempest takes Concentrated Effect or Increased Area for shape, Deep Channel for the channel payoff, and Spirit Drinker for mana return.
    • Armor Breaker attaches to the physical gems only. Each school owns its own penetration support, and the penetration supports conflict with each other.
    • Shield Charge rejects both area-resize and repeat supports. Give it Shielded Assault, which no other loadout can use.
    • Shouts take Resounding Command, Lingering Cry, Crowdcaller, and Blood Command.
    • Auras take Amplified Presence, Concentrated Presence, Rhythmic Pulse, and Anchored Presence.

Support Gems lists conflict groups and every rejection reason.

    Discipline directions

A character binds three panels from the twenty-panel catalog. Any panel fits any slot. The slots unlock at character levels 1, 10, and 20. Levels 1 through 48 grant one Remembrance Point each, for 48 points. One panel accepts at most 16 points. A Greater Truth unlocks at 9 invested points and a Final Truth at 16. Level 49 Crowns one full panel. Levels 49 through 53 grant five Ascendant Points in total.

Four directions that suit the sword and shield:

    • Physical, Armor, Block. The staple. Every panel pays the sword, the plate, and the shield at once.
    • Physical, Bleed, Recovery. Bleed converts sword hits into follow-up damage, and Recovery keeps you in the pack.
    • Fire, Ignite, Armor. The choice for an Emberpoint and Cinder Sweep pair, with the defensive layer unchanged.
    • Critical, Physical, Block. High variance offence with the shield still paid.

The Fighter is one of two classes that gains full value from the Block panel. Use that advantage. See Disciplines for Truths and the Crown.

    Gear priorities

    1. All four resistances to the cap. Partial resistance is worth close to nothing. Map tiers subtract resistance, so the sheet value has to sit above the cap before entry.
    2. Chaos resistance last to arrive. Fire, cold, and lightning reach the cap from ordinary drops. Chaos does not. Check chaos after every equip.
    3. Armour and block. This is the Fighter defensive layer. The shield carries most of it, and armour answers the physical majority of incoming damage.
    4. Life and life recovery. Add the pool after the mitigation holds.
    5. Offence last. Physical or elemental damage, melee damage, then accuracy. Match the school of your matrix pair.

Read How Survival Actually Works before you spend crafting currency. Overcap decides deep maps, not the sheet value.

    Traps

    • A weapon drop outside your family is not an upgrade. A great dagger or greataxe roll is trade material for a Fighter and nothing else. The equip rules reject it.
    • A talisman never counts as a shield. It does not satisfy the Block panel, Shield Stun, or Shield Charge. The Fighter cannot equip one at all.
    • Map entry needs both hands filled. The hub lets you stand with an empty off-hand. The map does not.
    • Do not spread across two damage schools. Each matrix gem deals 100% of one school. One school concentrates every increase, every penetration support, and one Discipline panel.
    • Do not delay the first support slot. The first slot costs 1,000 gold and is not free. A support that sits in the stash gains no levels.
