    Spellblade: Scepter, Shield or Talisman

The Spellblade build guide for the class-locked weapon rules, covering the scepter matrix, both legal off-hands, supports, Disciplines, and gear priorities.

The Spellblade carries a scepter in the main hand and either a shield or a talisman in the off-hand. That configuration is permanent. The class never changes weapon family, and no third pair of hands is legal. The hub tolerates an empty off-hand. Map entry refuses one.

    Your weapon

The main hand accepts a scepter and nothing else. The off-hand accepts a shield or a talisman. A Spellblade can never hold a second scepter, a wand, or a quiver.

Scepter bases, with the first map tier that drops them:

    BaseMap tier
    Ashen Scepter1
    Ash-Cantor Scepter1
    War Scepter2
    Tempest Reliquary3
    Storm Scepter5
    Winter-Sun Scepter5
    Grave-Lit Crozier7
    Crown of Runes10

A scepter is a melee weapon. It swings in close range, it carries a physical and an elemental damage budget together, and it satisfies the melee requirement that both shouts ask for. The Spellblade is the only caster class that can shout.

    The shield line

The shield slot ships 31 bases across six defence profiles: armour, evasion, energy shield, armour and evasion, armour and energy shield, and evasion and energy shield. Each profile ships five expansion bases at map tiers 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10, and Keeper Bulwark drops from tier 1 as the armour starter. A shield contributes a defence base, an implicit, and a full affix set. Block chance, spell suppression, resistance, and maximum-resistance rolls all live there.

The shield line alone unlocks the two shield gems. Shield Stun and Shield Charge require a real shield in the off-hand. Both go inactive the moment a talisman replaces it. The shield line also turns on every Block panel node.

    The talisman line

Talisman bases, with the first map tier that drops them:

    BaseMap tier
    Apprentice Talisman1
    Ember-Eye Talisman1
    Rimeglass Talisman3
    Wardstone Talisman5
    Storm-Cage Talisman5
    Occultist Talisman7
    Voidheart Talisman7
    Seven-Sigil Talisman10

A talisman contributes an energy shield base, a school implicit, and a full affix set. It suits a Spellblade that scales spell damage and energy shield over armour and block.

A talisman is not a shield. It carries its own slot type and no shield tag. It never satisfies a shield condition and it never satisfies a block condition. On the talisman line, Shield Stun, Shield Charge, and the whole Block panel stay inactive.

Both lines are complete builds. Both activate all ten matrix gems. Choose the shield line for armour, block, and the two shield gems. Choose the talisman line for energy shield and spell scaling.

    Your skill matrix

The scepter family owns ten matrix gems. Every one is exclusive to the scepter loadout, and every one works with either legal off-hand.

    SchoolSingle targetArea and clear
    PhysicalRunebreaker (strike)Runic Sweep (cone)
FireRunic Strike (strike)Ash Litany (channelled area)
    ColdFrostbrand (strike)Rimequake (nova)
    LightningStormbrand (strike)Runequake (nova)
    ChaosVoidbrand (strike)Gloam Litany (channelled area)

Every matrix gem requires character level 1. Every matrix gem deals 100% of its listed school. The gate is the exact loadout, not the gem tags. A scepter with a legal off-hand activates all ten. Any other pair of hands deactivates all ten.

This matrix is hybrid attack-spell. Every gem carries the attack tag and the spell tag together, so both support pools reach it and both damage buckets pay it. Speed is the exception. A hybrid reads the attack-speed total and the cast-speed total and takes the higher of the two. It never adds them.

Pick one single-target gem and one area gem at minimum. See the Skill Gem Index for the full data.

    Starter kit

A new Spellblade starts with these items and nothing else.

    PartValue
    Starter gemRunic Sweep
Main handAshen Scepter, item level 10
Off-handKeeper Bulwark shield, item level 10
    Attributes18 strength, 6 dexterity, 18 intelligence

Character creation starts every Spellblade on the shield line. A talisman arrives later by drop or by trade. Every class starts with exactly 42 attribute points and exactly one gem. There are no pouch grants. Every other gem arrives through a global drop or through player trading.

    Support gems

Each active gem instance holds four support slots. The slots unlock at gem levels 1, 5, 10, and 20, and they cost 1,000, 10,000, 75,000, and 500,000 gold. All four cost 586,000 gold together. The first slot is not free. The unlocks belong to the gem instance and survive a trade.

A support gains levels only while its host gem stays equipped. Bench a gem and its supports stop progressing.

Some supports fail on delivery shape rather than on tags. Ash Litany and Gloam Litany are channels, so both reject Spell Echo, Swift Incantation, Quickened Execution, and Deliberate Force. Shield Charge runs on a charge line, so it has no area to resize and it cannot repeat. It rejects Increased Area, Concentrated Effect, Expanding Pulse, and Aftershock.

On the shield line, Shield Stun and Shield Charge both take Shielded Assault, and Shield Stun also takes Melee Splash or Twin Reach.

Melee Splash and Twin Reach share the strike_shape conflict group. Increased Area, Concentrated Effect, and Expanding Pulse share area_shape. Attach one member of a conflict group per gem.

Shouts take twelve shout supports. Resounding Command, Lingering Cry, and one of Crowdcaller or Decisive Cry make a solid set. Auras take twelve aura supports and no hit supports.

See Support Gems for the full compatibility rules.

    Discipline directions

A character binds three panels from the twenty-panel catalog. Slots unlock at character levels 1, 10, and 20. Levels 1 through 48 grant one Remembrance Point each, for 48 total. One panel accepts at most 16 points. A Greater Truth unlocks at 9 invested points, and a Final Truth at 16. Level 49 Crowns one fully invested panel. Levels 49 through 53 grant five Ascendant Points.

Four directions that fit the scepter:

    • Spell, Armor, and Block. The shield line at its most defensive. Block only pays while a real shield sits in the off-hand.
    • Spell, Energy Shield, and the school you deal. The talisman line default. Energy Shield replaces the armour and block the talisman cannot give.
    • Spell, Fire, and Ignite. For a Runic Strike and Ash Litany bar. One school, one ailment, one aura.
    • Spell, Channeling, and Chaos. For a Gloam Litany bar. Channeling pays the litany directly, and Chaos pays the school nothing else covers.

See Disciplines for Truth and Crown mechanics.

    Gear priorities

Read How Survival Actually Works before you plan a single affix.

    1. All four resistances to the cap. Deep maps subtract a fixed penalty from every uncapped total, so overcap. Partial resistance is worth close to nothing. A pack delivers its damage in one school inside a few seconds, so the worst school decides the death.
    2. Chaos last to arrive. The three elemental schools close on ordinary drops. Chaos does not. Hunt suffixes that pay an element and chaos together, and read the affix before you assume an all-resistance roll covers chaos. A maximum-chaos-resistance roll moves the ceiling, not just the value, so it beats an ordinary chaos roll.
    3. Your chosen defensive layer. On the shield line, take armour and block chance. On the talisman line, take energy shield, energy-shield regeneration, and a shorter recharge delay. Do not split the two. A half-armour, half-energy-shield sheet reaches neither threshold.
    4. Life. A scepter fights in melee range. Life carries the hits that your layer does not.
    5. Offence last. Scepter damage, added elemental damage, critical chance, and the school your matrix gems deal. Skill-level affixes reach a hybrid gem from either the attack bucket or the spell bucket.

    Traps

    • The class lock is the trap. A sword or a wand that outrolls your scepter is worthless to you. The equip rules reject both in the main hand. Sell it or trade it.
    • The off-hand choice moves two gems and a whole panel. A talisman deactivates Shield Stun, Shield Charge, and every Block node the moment you equip it. Check the bar before you swap.
    • An empty off-hand kills the bar. A Spellblade with no shield and no talisman keeps its scepter and loses every matrix gem at once.
    • Hybrid speed takes the maximum, not the sum. One attack-speed ring and one cast-speed ring do the work of one ring. Pick the pool your gear already favours and stack it.
    • Litanies refuse the spell tempo supports. Ash Litany and Gloam Litany reject Spell Echo and Swift Incantation. The bench hides the failure by default. Read the rejection line and believe it.
