Brute Build: The Two-Handed Axe
How a Brute builds inside the permanent two-handed axe lock, with the eleven axe gems, support slots, Disciplines, and gear order.
A Brute holds a two-handed axe and nothing else. That is the only legal configuration, and it is permanent. The Brute never changes weapon family, and the Brute never equips an off-hand item of any kind. The hub tolerates an empty weapon slot. Map entry refuses one.
Your weapon
Main hand: two-handed axe. Off-hand: unavailable.
Six two-handed axe bases are enabled. The number in brackets is the map tier that unlocks the base.
| Base | Map tier |
|---|---|
| Warmarch Greataxe | 1 |
| Reaver Greataxe | 3 |
| Cinderfell Greataxe | 3 |
| Rimewrath Greataxe | 5 |
| Gravemaw Cleaver | 7 |
| Headsman’s Eclipse | 10 |
The axe uses both hands. The Brute has no shield, no talisman, and no quiver. One item carries the whole weapon budget, so an axe upgrade moves your damage more than any single item moves another class. The trade runs the other way on defence. Five classes buy defensive base values and a second block of resistance affixes from an off-hand. The Brute buys all of it from armour, jewellery, and Disciplines.
The Brute also gains nothing from the Block panel or from either shield gem. Both need a real shield.
Your skill matrix
The Brute matrix holds ten gems. Every gem below requires a two-handed axe.
| School | Single target | Area and clear |
|---|---|---|
| Physical | Heavy Strike | Headsman’s Arc (cone) |
| Fire | Cinder Splitter | Furnace Wake (cone) |
| Cold | Glacier Breaker | Permafrost Quake (nova) |
| Lightning | Thunder Hew | Stormfall (nova) |
| Chaos | Abyss Hew | Blightwake (cone) |
Every matrix gem is class-exclusive. Every one requires character level 1. Every one deals 100% of its listed damage school. The gate is the exact loadout, not the tag line.
The Brute owns an eleventh gem. Bloodwake Roar is a physical bleed shout, and it requires a two-handed axe of its own. No other class uses it.
You also use the two melee shouts, Vanguard’s Cry and Ruin Cry, which need a melee weapon in hand. Every class uses the six auras: Iron Choir, Quickening Current, Prismatic Covenant, Crimson Standard, Miasma Mantle, and Hushed Dominion. One aura runs at a time.
The Skill Gem Index lists the exact numbers.
Starter kit
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Starter gem | Headsman’s Arc |
| Starter weapon | Reaver Greataxe, item level 10 |
| Attributes | 28 STR / 8 DEX / 6 INT |
Every class starts with 42 attribute points and exactly one gem. There are no pouch grants. Every other gem arrives through a global drop or a player trade. Headsman’s Arc is a cone, so it clears packs from the first map. Add a single-target gem when one drops.
Support gems
Each active-gem instance holds four support slots. The slots unlock at gem levels 1, 5, 10, and 20 for 1,000, 10,000, 75,000, and 500,000 gold. The full set costs 586,000 gold. No slot is free. Buy each slot as soon as the gold and the gem level allow it.
A support gains levels only while its host gem stays equipped. Attach a correct cheap support early. A late perfect support never catches up.
Some supports fail on delivery shape and not on tags. Area-resize supports need a real area, so a strike, a charge, and a beam channel reject them. Repeat supports reject a single-target strike and a charge. Every Brute area gem is a cone or a nova, so the whole area-support family stays open to you.
Verified Brute attachments:
- Headsman’s Arc and the other four area gems take Increased Area or Concentrated Effect for shape, Aftershock for a second wave, and Crushing Momentum for flat hit damage. Increased Area, Concentrated Effect, and Expanding Pulse share one conflict group, so pick one.
- Heavy Strike and the other four strikes take Melee Splash for pack overlap, Close Combat for full-value range, and Sure Strike for accuracy.
- Armor Breaker attaches to the physical gems only. Each school owns its own penetration support, and the penetration supports conflict with each other.
- Blood Drinker or Spirit Drinker returns life or mana on hit. They conflict, so pick the resource you actually run dry.
- Bloodwake Roar and the two melee shouts take Resounding Command, Lingering Cry, Crowdcaller, and Blood Command.
- Auras take Amplified Presence, Concentrated Presence, Rhythmic Pulse, and Anchored Presence.
Support Gems lists conflict groups and every rejection reason.
Discipline directions
A character binds three panels from the twenty-panel catalog. Any panel fits any slot. The slots unlock at character levels 1, 10, and 20. Levels 1 through 48 grant one Remembrance Point each, for 48 points. One panel accepts at most 16 points. A Greater Truth unlocks at 9 invested points and a Final Truth at 16. Level 49 Crowns one full panel. Levels 49 through 53 grant five Ascendant Points in total.
Four directions that suit the axe:
- Physical, Armor, Bleed. The staple. The axe hits hard once, and bleed collects the rest.
- Physical, Armor, Recovery. The answer to the missing off-hand. Recovery replaces the mitigation a shield would carry.
- Fire, Ignite, Armor. The choice for a Cinder Splitter and Furnace Wake pair, with the defensive layer unchanged.
- Critical, Physical, Recovery. Slow heavy swings convert well into critical damage.
Never take the Block panel. The Brute cannot hold a shield, and its shield nodes stay inert. See Disciplines for Truths and the Crown.
Gear priorities
- All four resistances to the cap. Partial resistance is worth close to nothing. Map tiers subtract resistance, so the sheet value has to sit above the cap before entry.
- Chaos resistance last to arrive. Fire, cold, and lightning reach the cap from ordinary drops. Chaos does not. Check chaos after every equip.
- Armour. This is the Brute defensive layer, and it answers the physical majority of incoming damage. You buy every point of it from armour pieces, because you have no off-hand.
- Life and life recovery. The Brute stands inside the pack. The pool has to hold.
- Offence last. Physical or elemental damage, melee damage, then accuracy. Match the school of your matrix pair.
Read How Survival Actually Works before you spend crafting currency. Overcap decides deep maps, not the sheet value.
Traps
- The missing off-hand is a defence problem, not a damage problem. Other classes carry two defensive bases. Budget armour, life, and resistance affixes to cover the gap.
- A weapon drop outside your family is not an upgrade. A great sword, dagger, or bow roll is trade material for a Brute. The equip rules reject it.
- Do not take the Block panel and do not chase block affixes. Block needs a shield, and the Brute cannot hold one.
- Do not spread across two damage schools. Each matrix gem deals 100% of one school. One school concentrates every increase, every penetration support, and one Discipline panel.
- Do not pass over Bloodwake Roar. It is an axe-only shout, so only a Brute uses it. It adds physical bleed to a build that already scales bleed.
